6th Grade students kick off their Economics unit with a lesson on scarcity. Each group represented a "country" and was allotted only certain resources yet required to produce specific items. Students soon found they did not have the necessary resources to produce the required goods. Through cooperation and discussion these students realized that scarcity leads to trade and barter. Most importantly students realized the difficulty and hardships that can develop when a "country" experiences scarcity.
